Is There a Speaker in the House?

The 51st Legislative Session will open, Monday, February 4. The focus should be on the thousands of pieces of legislature introduced by both the House and the Senate; however, something more captivating will draw the attention away from the opening session.

All eyes and ears will be waiting to see and hear who our next speaker of the house will be. The Speaker of the House is considered the third most powerful position in state government, following the Governor and Senate President Pro Tempore. The position formerly held by Lance Cargill will be determined by a vote of the Republican caucus at 8:30 a.m. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. both members of the House Party, will vote to elect the next speaker. Cargill resigned from the position amist allegations involving taxes.
