
Today, millions of people around the world will observe the birth, life and death of Dr. Martian Luther King Jr. For some it is a day off. For many it is a day of. For all it is a day the United States will recognize Dr. King's lifelong work for peace.
The third Monday in January is a federal legal holiday commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday. On Monday, January 20, 1986, in cities and towns across the country people celebrated the first official Martin Luther King Day, the only federal holiday commemorating an African-American.
